STRATEGY FOR GRID CONNECTED RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN VIETNAM

Prime Minister of Vietnam has approved the "Strategy for development of renewable energy in Vietnam until 2030 and vision to 2050" in November 2015; This strategy has introduced a clear perspective, goals and policy guidelines for the development of RE in 2030 and orientations to 2050. The objectives given in this strategy is the basis for determining resource force in the development of renewable energy sources.

Hydropower Development

The total capacity of hydropower resources of Vietnam currently about 17,000 MW, by 2025 most of hydropower resources have been developed with a total capacity of about 25,000 MW. Proportion of hydropower generation capacity in the national electricity system fell from 50% in 2015 to 22% in 2030 and around 10% in 2050 (figure below).

In 2015, the hydropower resources of Vietnam produces about 56 billion kWh from hydro sources in 2025 produced about 96 billion kWh. Proportion of hydropower generation capacity in the national electricity system fell from 43% in 2015 to 17% in 2030 and around 9% in 2050 (figure below).

Wind power development

Wind power capacity increased from 135 MW at present to 1,000 MW by 2020; approximately 6,200 MW in 2030 and about 20,000 MW by 2050. To raise the percentage of wind power capacity in the national electricity system to be around 2% in 2020, about 4% in 2030 and about 5% in 2050 (following figure).

Electricity production from wind power increased from approximately 180 million kWh in 2015 to around 2.5 billion kWh in 2020; about 16 billion kWh in 2030 and 53 billion kWh by 2050. Bringing proportion of electricity produced from wind power in total electricity generation from the current negligible levels to reach about 1.0% on the year in 2020, about 2.7% in 2030 and around 5.0% in 2050 (following figure).

Solar Energy Development

Because the equipments uses solar energy to heat with simple technology, so in this section only to use solar energy for power generation. Developing solar power to provide electricity to the national electricity system and areas outside the national grid.

In Strategy,  the capacity of solar power is about 908 MW by 2020; increased to 23,600 MW in 2030 and nearly 14,000 in 2050. The proportion of solar power capacity from the current negligible levels to reach 1.4% in 2020, about 17% in 2030 and around 38% 2050 (following figure).

Electricity produced from solar energy to increase from 10 million kWh in 2015 to around 1.4 billion kWh in 2020; about 35.4 billion kWh in 2030 and about 210 billion kWh by 2050. Bringing the proportion of electricity produced from solar energy in total electricity generation from negligible levels at present to approximately 0, 5% in 2020, about 6% in 2030 and 20% in 2050 (following figure).

Biomass energy development

In the Strategy, the total biomass used increased from about 14.4 million TOE in 2015, to about 16.2 million TOE in 2020; approximately 32.2 million TOE in 2030 and 62.5 million TOE in 2050. Among them:

- Biomass for power generation increased from 0.3 million TOE in 2015 to about 1.8 million TOE in 2020; approximately 9.0 million TOE in 2030 and 20 million TOE in 2050. Corresponding electricity production increased from 0.6 billion kWh in 2015 to nearly 7.8 billion kWh in 2020; about 37 billion kWh by 2030 and 85 billion kWh by 2050. Bringing proportion of electricity produced from biomass in total electricity production from about 1.0% to about 3.0% in 2015 in 2020 ; about 6.3% in 2030 and around 8.1% in 2050.

- Biomass for heat production rose from 13.7 million TOE in 2015, about 13.6 million TOE in 2020, rising to 16.8 million TOE in 2030 and about 23 million TOE in 2050. biomass energy in final energy demand accounts for about 25% in 2015, up about 17% in 2020, accounting for 14% in 2030 and approximately 12% in 2050.

- Total biomass for biofuels production increased from 0.2 million TOE in 2015 to about 0.8 million TOE in 2020; about 6.4 million TOE in 2030 and about 19.5 million TOE in 2050.

In Strategy,  the capacity of biomass power is about 1800 MW by 2020; increased to 7600 MW in 2030 and 14,400 in 2050. The proportion of biomass power capacity from the current 1% to reach 3% in 2020, about 5% in 2030 and around 4% 2050 (following figure).
